BETA Circus, a triennial participatory circus arts initiative, needed a publication that could carry the weight of three years of community practice. The book had to function simultaneously as an academic resource and a cultural artefact.

Documenting essays, case studies, and critical reflections from the 2023–2025 edition, the publication had to honour the rigour of the written work while feeling worthy of the community it represented. A publication people keep. Not a report — a book.

The design brief: holographic foil hot stamping on the cover, two-colour (black and silver) interior printing throughout, and a typographic system capable of carrying both dense academic text and expansive visual material across 200+ pages without the system ever breaking.

Interior spread — editorial layout system

A two-colour constraint isn't a limitation — it's a design problem with a specific set of answers. Black and silver had to carry the full weight of a complex publication without any of the shortcuts that a full-colour palette provides.

"Good editorial design disappears into the reading experience. The grid, the type, the pacing — all of it exists to serve the ideas on the page, not to announce itself."

The primary challenge was typographic range. The publication needed to accommodate essays written for academic audiences, case study documentation, pull quotes, image captions, recommendations sections, and community contributions — each with its own reading speed and visual register — all held within a single, coherent system.

The secondary challenge was the cover. Holographic foil hot stamping is a process with specific constraints — registration tolerances, foil behaviour on different substrates, the relationship between the foil area and the surrounding design. The cover treatment had to be designed with production in mind from the first sketch.

Every decision rooted in the content. The system exists to serve the ideas — not the other way around.

01

EDITORIAL ARCHITECTURE

Structured 200+ pages of academic and reflective content into a coherent, navigable system. Defined hierarchy across essays, case studies, pull quotes, and critical reflections — making dense material readable without simplifying it.

02

TYPOGRAPHY & GRID SYSTEM

Built a typographic system capable of carrying both dense academic text and expansive visual material. The grid accommodates both reading modes — text-heavy pages breathe, visual spreads command space — without breaking the system's internal logic.

03

TWO-COLOUR INTERIOR

Designed throughout for two-colour production: black and silver. Every element — type, rules, image treatments, backgrounds — was considered in the context of this constraint. The limitation became the aesthetic. Black and silver gives the book a precision that full colour could never achieve.

04

COVER & HOLOGRAPHIC FOIL

The cover treatment uses holographic foil hot stamping — a material choice that references both the spectacle of circus performance and the precision of fine publishing. Designed with production constraints integrated from the first sketch: foil area, substrate, registration, and the way the holographic element reads under different lighting conditions.

05

PRINT PRODUCTION & VENDOR COORDINATION

Prepared complete print-ready files: PDF/X with bleeds, crop marks, and colour profiles for both the two-colour interior and the foil cover. Worked directly with the print shop through proofing to ensure the holographic effect landed as designed — not as a surprise.

Interior spreads — text and image layouts within the two-colour system

A publication the community keeps. The holographic foil performs under light. The two-colour interior holds across 200+ pages without fatigue. The typographic system serves the work it documents without competing with it.
